Today it was announced that Albritton Communications will be laying off much of the staff of TBD. TBD is a web publication focusing on news, sports, and events in the Washington DC region, and was launched on August 9, 2010. Displaying Category Names in WordPress
I just upgraded one of my blogs to WordPress 3.0 and found a bug (feature?) in my theme. The category name was missing from one column on the home page. I ended up changing this line: single_cat_title(); to this: wp_list_categories(“include=$category&title_li=&style=none”); and all is fine again. Note: The double quotes on the second command are required. […]
Tweaking My Server Security
Over the past few weeks my web/email server has been attacked multiple times. So I’ve started hardening my defenses. Stay tuned as I will be documenting what I do and what I learn. Today I’ve been experimenting with iptables and the settings for my sshd (the server that allows me to connect to the web […]

Making the 4G Blacklist Easier to Manage
Jeff Starr wrote back in March about his attempts at keeping scammers and crackers and other undesirables away from his web sites. From the Pixelpost introduction: Meet Pixelpost, a small photoblog application that’s a no-brainer to set up and use. It’s perfect for […]
Double Check The Year In Your Footer
With the new year comes a very easily remedied problem: many web sites still say 2009 in their footer. You can either hard-code the year in the footer.php page in your site’s template and manually update each January 1st. Or you can add this bit of php code: <?php echo date(‘Y’); ?> in place of […]
BitTorrent for 2009-11-26
I like BitTorrent, but it is very frustrating when no one is seeding the document.
Step on the Tasap Spider
I recommend any non-Chinese web site block the TaspaSider, from http://www.tasap.com. It does not request robots.txt, and requested 387 pages from one of my web sites in 74 seconds. The user agent was “Tasapspider/0.9 (http://www.tasap.com)” and the IP address was 218.28.29.234. Update 2010-03-05: Also blocked 218.28.29.236.
